Deer Flies
Professor Bob Lane, before launching an illustrious career studying ticks and arthropod-vectored diseases, completed his doctoral dissertation on deer flies, particularly Chrysops hirsuticallus Philip 1941 & other Chrysops species (Diptera: Tabanidae). This work resulted in a publication detailing the biology and distribution of deer flies in California – Middlekauff, W. W. and R. S. Lane. 1980. Adult and Immature Tabanidae (Diptera) of California. Bulletin of the California Insect Survey 22: 1-99, 133 figs.
