Return to Introduction

1 Scutellum not laminate apically; most specimens with dark area anterior-apically on forewing …………..…….… lamasi
1’ Scutellum laminate apically; wings completely hyaline ……………………….……………………………………………………….…. 2

2(1) Orbital piliferous punctures minute, mostly separated by distinctly more than their own diameters..…..……… sipylus
2’ Orbital piliferous punctures larger, separated by about their own diameters …..……………………………………..….…… sp. 1

Sp. 1: Alameda, Contra Costa, Lassen, Los Angeles, Modoc, Napa, Riverside, San Bernardino, Shasta, Sierra, Solano, Stanislaus, Tuolumne (RLZC, UCD, UCF, UCR). Most specimens have the body all dark (except the metasoma yellow basally). A few specimens have the mesosoma partially yellow, and previously I considered these as a separate species, but I can find no reliable morphological differences and now treat them as different color forms of the same species.

Described Nearctic species and distribution

lamasi (Domenichini, 1951): MEX (Morelos), USA (CA)
sipylus (Walker, 1837): Presumed accidentally introduced into USA (CA)

Remarks

Kerrich (1967) provides good descriptions of the two described species.
