Directions for Getting Here
The University of California Berkeley campus is located east of downtown Berkeley in the East Bay (eastern side of the San Francisco Bay) just north of Oakland. The Essig Museum of Entomology is currently located in Wellman Hall on the Berkeley campus, however we are scheduled to move to the bottom floor of the Valley Life Sciences Building in the spring of 2009.
To get to Wellman Hall
Once you are on campus, pass the parking kiosk at the west entrance to campus from Oxford Street, and proceed east along University Drive. Circumnavigate the West Circle (with the large eucalyptus tree in the middle) slightly over half-way and take the first turnoff to the right which climbs slightly for about 40 meters. Wellman Hall is the building with the rounded front directly to your left at the top of this rise. Wellman Hall is at B-3 on the campus map. The entrance to the Essig Museum is on the second floor.
Driving
From Highway 80, take University Avenue east, which ends at the semicircular West Gate. Campus parking is limited and permits are required throughout the campus area, but a temporary permit may be arranged for research visitors by the Collection Manager with sufficient advanced notice. There are also several public parking structures in the adjacent downtown Berkeley area.
Public Transportation
BART - The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train stops in downtown Berkeley, one block from the western entrance to campus. BART can be accessed directly at the San Francisco airport (SFO) or by using the AirBART shuttle bus from Oakland airport (OAK). See BART routes and schedules for more information.
Bus - The Alameda-Contra Costa bus system (AC Transit) has several bus lines that stop along Shattuck Avenue in downtown Berkeley one block from the western entrance to campus. The bus system services much of the northern East Bay area. See AC Transit routes and schedules for more information.
