COCHYLINI

The taxa formerly assigned to Cochylidae (Powell 1983 in Hodges, MONA Check List) are now considered to comprise a clade at the tribal level within Tortricinae. Generic reassignments from those of the 1983 checklist are based on the unpublished Ph. D. Thesis by M. Pogue (U. Minnesota, 1988), as reflected by his arrangement of the collections at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C. Several of the remaining unplaced species have been assigned to new genera by Pogue. Many species formerly listed as incertae sedis (Powell 1983) have been given generic assignments by Razowski (1997), who acknowledged access to Pogue's notes and photographs of type species. The descriptive taxonomy of the Neotropical fauna has been increased enormously in recent decades by Razowski, often affecting generic assignments of North American species. See summaries by Razowski (1994, 1995).

Phtheochroa Stephens, 1829

Type species [Tortrix] rugosana Huebner[1799], by monotypy, Palaearctic.

About 40 Neotropical species assigned by Razowski (1986a) and later references. Razowski (1987b) treated Trachysmia Guenee, 1845, as a subjective synonym of Phtheochroa, and later (1991) transferred 9 of the former North American Trachysmia (=Hysterosia Stephens, 1852) species to Phtheochroa, leaving 5 in apparent limbo, 2 of which Razowski transferred to Phtheochroa in 1997.

Minnesota, 1988), of which felix (Walsingham) is the type species of Platphalonidia Razowski (1985) and plicana (Walsingham) was placed in Platphalonidia by Razowski (1986c); and Razowski (1997) has transferrred others to Gynnidomorpha and Phalonidia. The remaining CA spp. are assigned here to Saphenista, following Pogue. See Razowski (1985b) for a discussion of this group of genera.]
